Known as "Ned" he was born in Georgetown, DC, the son of Rufus Taylor Cheyney and Lucie Marie Bolmar. A professor in the Division of Horticulture at the University of Minnesota, he is shown here at the Forestry School at Lake Itasca in Minnesota.

He was married in 1907 to Harriet Frances Porter, who was the daughter of Richard Henry Porter and Virginia Raney of Apalachicola, Florida. Their two children were: Virginia Brunin (Mrs. Eugene C. Young) and Lucie Marie (Mrs. Robert A. Manke).
