Edward Gheen Cheyney 1878-1950
Known as "Ned" he was born in Georgetown, DC, the son of Rufus Taylor Cheyney and Lucie Marie Bolmar.
He completed his academic work at Cornell University in 1903 and went to Yale Forestry School for graduate work. He began his tenure at the University of Minnesota as an assistant to Professor Green in the Division of Horticulture.
In 1908 he got a concession from the State Forestry Board which gave them the right to place a school on some land back of the lake at Itasca State Park in Minnesota which then served as a demonstration ground for the Forestry School. Consequently most of his time was spent at Lake Itasca for summer classes and at his home in St. Paul (near the university) during the academic year.
He was married in 1907 to Harriet Frances Porter, who was the daughter of Richard Henry Porter and Virginia Raney of Apalachicola, Florida. Their two children were: Virginia Brunin (Mrs. Eugene C. Young) and Lucie Marie (Mrs. Robert A. Manke).
