Elias sanders Dyar, called "Sanders" by the family and others, was born in 1830 in Elbert County, Georgia. His father was Joel Hunter Dyar, his mother, Rachel Elizabeth Sanders. He had seven known siblings: William, Lavonia (Lavinia), Joel Hunter II, Patience, Mary (Minnie"), Elisha Marion and Jonathan Pressley.

On July 5, 1849, he married Sarah Ann Powell (1835-December 31 1925). They had three known children: Tinsley Frank (or Franklin), Elizabeth ("Liza") Jane and James Henry Dyar. Sanders was a farmer, town constable and deputy sheriff prior to entering military service.

On July 17, 1861, he enlisted in the Confederate Army and was elected Second Lieutenant by his comrades. He was wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness (possibly the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse) in May, 1864 and died June 6 of that year of sepsis in a Richmond hospital. He is buried at the Hollywood Cemetery in that city.

He served in the Army of Northern Virginia, 16th Georgia Regiment, Company C.
