gilbert augustus bishopGilbert Augustus Bishop 1817-1907

According to his obituary, Rev. Gilbert Bishop was one of the oldest residents and the oldest Moravian missionary of Bethlehem, PA.

After he relinquished mission service owing to the distressing conditions brought on by the Civil War, Mr. Bishop engaged in the milling business manufacturing buckwheat and oatmeal which was sold throughout the State.

When he retired to a more quiet life at 60 Church Street his time was partly taken up at his trade, that of cabinet maker.  He continued his work until infirmities of age compelled him to retire permanently.

He died at his residence, 60 Church Street, aged 90 years, 6 months and 7 days. Death was due to old age. He had been confined to his room since the latter part of August.

Gilbert was born in Bethlehem, on March 20, 1817, and was the son of the late Charles and Anna Maria Schneckenberg Bishop.

Approx. 88 years of age, Bethleham, PA
