Cheyney cabin at Lake Itasca State Park in Minnesota.
Photographed when newly constructed in the early
1900s the cabin was used to house faculty of the Forestry School of the
University of Minnesota. Now it is scheduled for demolition in the next
few days as it is now just plain worn out . . . leaks, rotting,
foundation breaking up
Since the Cheyney cabin is the very
last of the original log structures, they are very serious about
recycling some of the materials. For instance, the southern
Yellow Pine flooring is in excellent shape, maybe the fireplace (which
everyone has said is the best one ever in terms of draw and
smokelessness), and ripping interior finish paneling "logs" from the
tamarack-log exterior walls.
Prof. Edward G. Cheyney is shown seated on the porch of the cabin along
with his wife, Frances Porter and daughters, Virginia and Lucie Cheyney.
