David Muir was born January 31, 1840 in Muirkirk, Ayrshire, Scotland. He died October 31, 1894 Glenbuck, Ayrshire, Scotland. He was the son of Joseph Muir and the former Catherine Jamieson.

On December 25, 1862 David Muir married the former Jane Gibson, daughter of Daniel Gibson and his wife Margaret Dalziel. Jane was born February 28, 1838 in Cleughhead, Muirkirk Parish, Ayrshire, Scotland. She died in 1931.

David and Jane had ten children: Jane, Joseph, Daniel, Francis, Jean, Janet, William, Margaret, James, and John. Their son Joseph, who immigrated to the US in 1882 was the grandfather of Andra Ilene Riggs Schmidt.
