Jane Gibson Muir was born February 28, 1838 in Cleughhead, Muirkirk Parish, Ayrshire, Scotland. She died in 1931. She was the daughter of Daniel Gibson and his wife, the former Margaret Dalziel.

On December 25, 1862 she married David Muir at Grasshill, parish of Muirkirk, Ayrshire, Scotland. The chief employment of the area was coal mining and David worked as an engineer, probably at the local mine. She and David had 10 children: Jane, Joseph, Daniel Gibson, Francis, Jean, Janet Gibson Jamieson, William, Margaret, James, and John Gibson Muir.

She is the maternal great grandmother of Andra Ilene Riggs Schmidt.
