James Hamilton McWhorter 1811-1885

Born probably in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, the oldest of six children of Hugh McWhorter and Helena Ligon.

He was known as an extensive farmer, a prominent Mason, and had been a life-long member of the Bairdstown Baptist Church. He served in both houses of the Georgia Legislature and was a member of the House of Representatives from Oglethorpe County, Georgia for eight years.

James was married in 1831 to Elizabeth Penn. Their eight children were: Joseph Hugh, Elizabeth Jane, Matilda Helen, William Penn, Robert Pierce, James Hamilton, Mary Eliza Cheney, and Matthew Hill McWhorter.

This painting was donated by a descendant to the Georgia Archives.
