Joseph Muir was born in Glenbuck, Ayrshire, Scotland, UK at 6:11 am November 4, 1863. He was the son of David Muir and his wife Jane Gibson.

Joseph left home in 1882 and sailed to USA. He traveled to Montana and became a sheepherder. Eventually he bought land and raised sheep. He added acres and stock over the years until he had a very sizable ranch in Wheatland County.

On November 23, 1901 in Deer Lodge, MT, he married Bertha Higgins (born between 1878 - 1879 in Greenfield, MO). Her mother was Nancy Newton Grider and her father was John Higgins. They had 8 children: Dorothy Jean, Nicholas David, Frances, Jane, Mary Helen (mother of Andra Schmidt), Josephine, Marjorie, and another baby who died at birth.

Joseph died September 3, 1937 in near Harlowton, Wheatland County, Montana. He was the maternal grandfather of Andra Schmidt.
