Herndon was born 3-23-1901 in Dalton, Georgia and died in January 1963, the son of  Jefferson Davis Thomas, Sr. and Lily Herndon.

Herndon was married first in 1924 to Sarah Sanders in Atlanta, Georgia and second in 1938 to Grace Edna Wilkey in Birmingham, Alabama.
