Born in London, England, the son of Rev. William Porter and Sarah Lowther. He was married in 1798 to Mary Gibbs, who was the daughter of Richard Gibbs and Margery Harrison.

Their six children were: (Rev) Thomas, Samuel, Sarah, Anna, Bethia and Elizabeth Porter.
