Born in Apalachicola, Florida, the daughter of Richard Henry Porter and Virginia Raney. She was married in 1907 to Edward Gheen Cheyney and moved to St. Paul, Minnesota where he taught in the School of Forestry at the University of Minnesota.

Their children were Virginia Brunin and Lucie Marie Cheyney.
