Roswell was born in Jonesville, South Carolina, the last of ten children of the Rev. William Salter Porter and Effie Amanda Walker.

This photo was made when he was stationed in Salt Lake, Utah.

Roswell was married in 1945 to Emma Jane Melvin. Their son is John Walker Porter.
