John Welby McWhorter 1866-1944
Son of William Hugh McWhorter and Elizabeth Cheney
He was mayor of Watkinsville, Georgia for four years and operated The
Oconee Enterprise there for twelve years.
He served churches as pastor in Chattooga, Oconee, Toombs, and Barrow
Counties in Georgia. He farmed extensively and successfully wherever he
lived, and owned and operated weekly newspapers in several Georgia and
Florida counties.
He was one of the founders of the People's Bank of Winder, Georgia and served as its first president in 1926.
