John was the son of George Cook Davis and Jane Montgomery. Mary was the daughter of George Washington Malcom and Susannah Allen.

John and Mary were married in 1842 and lived in Rutledge, Georgia where they raised eight children: Joel Colley, George Washington, Laura Ann, Elizabeth America, Eugenia Frances, Mary Fleeta, James Montgomery, and John Henry Morgan Davis.
