Known as "Ned", he was the son of Richard Gibbs Porter Jr. and Steptoe Irene Rice. He was married to Louise Messina who was the daughter of Joseph Messina of Apalachicola, Florida. Their only child was a daughter, Memory Louise Porter.

Ned worked for many years at the St.Joe Paper Company while his true love was baseball. His name can be found in the encyclopedia "Total Baseball" as a pitcher with the New York Giants in 1926-27.
