She was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina but was raised in New York City, the daughter of Benjamin F. Salter and Harriet Chase Tibbits.

She was married in 1845 to Richard Gibbs Porter who was the son of Thomas Porter and Mary Gibbs.

They moved south and settled in Apalachicola, Florida where seven children were born to them: Thomas Francis, Richard Henry, Edward Gibbs, Elizabeth Pepperrell, Gilbert Rodman, William Salter and Richard Gibbs Porter, Jr.
