Martin was born in Rochester, Olmsted County, Minnesota, the son of Christen Madsen and Maren Frandsen. He was a Master Mechanic and was married November 28, 1918 to Helen Agnes Howatt 1889-1955, who was the daughter of John Howatt and Helen Milne.

Their four children were Maxwell (Max) Howatt, Donald Gordon, Roger Alexander, and Alice Jane Madsen.
