Helen was born June 15, 1857 in Milltown, Rothiemay, Banff, Scotland, the daughter of Alexander Milne and Isabel Anderson. She was married June 30, 1877 to John Howatt, who was the son of John Howat and Anne Christie.

Their daughter was Helen Agnes Howatt 1889-1955 who married Martin Madsen 1879-1940.
