Alice was born September 11, 1927 in Hibbing, St. Louis County, Minnesota, the daughter of Martin Madsen and Helen Agnes Howatt. She was married June 4, 1949 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Hollace Alden (Sandy) Sandholm, who was the son of Holman Grover Sandholm and Myrtle Adeline Hammelun.

Their six children were: Holly Ann, Scott Thomas, Jon Michael, Paul Howatt, Christine Mary and Eric Martin Sandholm.
