Alexander was born June 24, 1817 in Bogfur, Kintore, Aberdeen, Scotland, the son of George Milne and Helen Shand. He was married November 20, 1851 to Isabel Anderson  1825-1914, who was the daughter of Charles Anderson and Isabel Bain.

Their daughter was Helen Milne 1857-1913 who was married 1877 to John Howatt 1848-1910.
