Born in Greene County, GA. Stephen was an early Georgia Planter, and also attended Mercer University in Penfield. Stephen was married in 1849 to Martha Cheney and they raised 13 children.

Stephen English joined the Confederate Army in 1861 and was discharged in 1862, disability. He came home to Georgia to raise his family in Crawford. Stephen's father was John Henry English.

Martha Cheney 1832-1913
Martha was the daughter of William Owen Cheney and Elizabeth Callaway. Martha was a noble Christian mother and a good wife to her husband. Her father served in the Confederate Army and so did three of her brothers.
