Born in Apalachicola, Florida, the son of Richard Gibbs Porter and Mary Tibbits Salter, he was educated at the Media Academy in Media, Pennsylvania, the University of Pennsylvania and graduated from Princeton Seminary in 1891.

He was married at Crescent, Georgia in 1895 to Effie Amanda Walker, who was the daughter of Reuben King Walker and Lydia Caroline Quaterman.

Pastor of Presbyterian Church, at Georgetown, SC 1921-26. Since removed to Washington, GA to live with son Rev. W.S.Porter, Jr., Pastor of Presbyterian Church there.
