Born in Milton, Santa Rosa County, Florida, the second of ten children of Rev. William Salter Porter and Effie Amanda Walker. He was married in 1924 to Maude Elizabeth Stone.

His obituaty states "He attended Davidson College and served as an artillery lieutenant on the Mexican Boarder and in France during World War I. A resident of Spartanburg for the past 27 years Mr. Porter was connected with the Spartan Mill and Grain Co. until November 1942 when he enlisted in the Army."

"He served as a captain with a Military Police organization in england for 2 years prior to his discharge in September 1945. Since returning to civilian life, Mr. Porter has been associated with M.S. Christman in the real estate business."
