William Hugh McWhorter 1894-1979

Born in Buckhead, Morgan County, Georgia, the third of ten children of John Welby McWhorter and Eva Douglas Zuber.

He began his newspaper career in 1909 at the age of fifteen, setting type by hand for his father, who edited The Oconee Enterprise. He became managing editor and co-owner of The DeKalb New Era and after forty-three years of service, retired in 1964.

In 1945 Hugh was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives, served two terms in the State Senate, and served on the legislative committee of the National Editorial Association.

Hugh was married in 1914 to Edina Lee Fenwick, the daughter of John Calvin Fenwick and Stella Lewis Spooner of Massachusetts.

The three children of Hugh and Edna were: William Hugh, Jr., Virginia Lee, and Dorothy Jane McWhorter.
